Happy Thanksgiving!
OK, I'd like to thank you all again for your participation at the last hospital visit. It went very well and the hospital was impressed with how we handled things.
I'd also like to extend a special thank you to those who did not participate, but showed your support and shared your ideas through Facebook and other mediums. If you aren't a member of the Facebook group, feel free to join by clicking the link on the left of this page.
Our next visit to the hospital will be on Sunday, November 30th. Also, we have two more events coming up.
December 12th is the party at Holy Name School on 700N 5th street in Camden, NJ.
The time they have give us was 9:30am-1:30pm. We will meet at the church then and load the gifts on a truck and have the gifts driven over there. I would advise everyone meeting at the church first.
There are books that are going to be taken to the school as well. We are going to set up sections for different ages. That means the books will have to be observed, and placed in the proper section. Yes, this is going to take time and energy. This all happens before the actual party begins.
What can you do? For one, you can show up! We need people to help bringing the gifts to the school, and setting things up. Also, you may bring a dessert. If you can bake something, that would be great. Contact me, and we can discuss specifics. Obviously when baking goods, you need to know how much you need to make. If you have any questions, please contact me through phone, email, or Facebook.
Event 2: The Adopt a Family Program takes place on December 17.
This program involves the church giving gifts to families. We were given ideas for gifts that we can get, and that you can get if you would like.
Now, lets put this into context, because the word gift has its assumptions that come along with it. Many of these families are not doing well. I know for sure that these are families that are not economically well off. These are single parents that are struggling with more than 4 children in most of them. They cannot afford underwear and socks, lady necessities, clothing, shampoo, deodorant, soap, you know, daily needs. These are things that we take for granted.
Of course, there are also the more superficial yet important things like toys and board games. One thing though, any toys can not represent violence. Remember that we are working with a church here.
Food: Turkeys and ham are fine. Any type of food is welcome. Please keep it healthy.
Boxes: We need boxes. You know the boxes that computer paper comes in? These are perfect. Anything too large will obviously be unmanageable for the families that have to walk back or take the bus back to their homes. Just reasonably sized boxes that a variety of things can fit in. Not something ridiculously small like shoe boxes, but also not something huge like a box that you got your big screen tv in.
Board games: We were suggested to get about half a dozen board games. I would like to see what we can do in this respect, and you are welcome to pick up a board game if you would like as well.
